Remnants 18 - Late-night Limbo: Part 5 (Invasion of Limbo)

I've been suspecting this rare, specialized version of limbo for quite some time now, and I finally encountered it again, confirming its existence.

Unlike all previous forms of limbo, this one (as the name implies) includes interaction with other people. This interaction (as the name implies) takes place while you are already in some form of limbo (excluding Life Balance, since that state is permanent - more on that later). Now, the logical way to think about it is this:

  • You've devolved such that you have entered limbo.
  • Thus, in essence, you have entered an alternate dimension whose boundaries (rather, whose end) can only be determined subconsciously or by a musical cue.
  • You're forcibly taken out of that alternate dimension physically, with your mind dragging slowly behind your body.

Already we can see that there are several potential issues with this setup. For one, how is it possible for you to be taken out of the alternate dimension if you don't know where/when it ends? The simple answer is that your senses tell you that you're back in reality. You hear your name called. You stop seeing the light you left on to help you stay out of limbo. You feel a stiff nudge. Your senses snap back from their status as tools of your imagination, and then they tell your imagination that it's about time it snapped back, too. Of course, imagination would never listen to the senses that just defected from its control, but then again, imagination would be putting itself in a tug-of-war match against 5 senses. Thus, imagination will inevitably find itself being dragged away from limbo to some extent.

Here's where it gets complicated. At this point, your senses, and thus your physical body, are already out of limbo. According to the formless monster that is ToK (Theory of Knowledge, for those of you who weren't forced to live through it), it is possible for you to know, from your senses, that you are no longer in limbo. But by that knowledge, you make the limits of limbo undefinable, as per the second point in the logical way to think about it. You know that you're not in limbo, but because you know you're not in limbo you're potentially still in limbo. In this particular case, you're definitely still in limbo, because since your imagination is still hanging out in limbo, that means 2 ways of knowing, emotion and logic, are also still in limbo.

Such is the dilemma of an invasion of limbo. You will be forever straddling the nonexistent line between reality and limbo. All because someone <cough>parents</cough> decided to interrupt your nice vacation to limbo. Really. This half-limbo state sucks. What's worse is that when you get into this form of limbo, there's actually like no way to get out. Pretty much the only thing you can do is sit and wait for your senses to tire out due to lack of further stimulus, then get sucked back into limbo by your imagination, then finally come out the other end of limbo like any other trip. That is, of course, unless someone <cough>parents</cough> decides to come invade again and again. Then you're pretty much screwed. And by screwed I mean zero cognitive ability from like 11:00 PM to 2:20 AM, at which point you're basically so exhausted from going back and forth between reality and limbo that you just go straight to sleep. Which really sucks when you haven't finished your homework by 11:00. I guess some people <cough>parents</cough> just don't care about me getting good grades or something.
